COLLAGES
Obviously i am a huge F1 fan,
and after making a Lewis Hamilton portrait out of 250,000
hole punch dots, i wanted to make more portraits of the
f1 drivers that i have supported over the years as at
this point I couldn't face any more dots. The idea came
to me (as my dog tore another copy out of the Postman's'
hands and shredded the front cover...again) to make them
out of the "F1 Racing" magazines that i have
been collecting for the past 10 years. I decided to make
them where you can read their F1 careers in their faces,
giving the viewer two experiences with each portrait depending
on the distance viewed.
The technique i used in principle is similar
to the dots in that it is based on optical mixing, where
you eyes see one thing close up but the further you move
away your brain mixes the colours/text together, blends
them, like mixing red and yellow in a pallet to make orange,
except instead of doing it in a pallet at a certain distance
your eyes and brain do the mixing for you. The difference
this time was the added complication of text and photographs
that had to blend together as well as the colours.
I started with Jenson because last year
after attending the British grand prix i started Lewis'
portrait, so being a little superstitious i did the same
thing for Jenson, hoping it may bring him luck for the
championship.I only allowed myself to use the whole pages
that were about jenson (then i could use the coloured
bits around the sides), or cut out the smaller articles
on other pages. This dictated the colours of the portrait
a little. Of course so has the teams they have driven
for. Jenson has alot of white as he drove white based
cars for so long, the same withe the other two, the colour
of the teams they have driven for has affected the results.
When i had completed Jenson i decided
i could do it better, so i made David Coulthard who i
supported for many years, and then Kimi Raikkonen. Eventually
i would like to build up a whole collection, with each
one my technique improves and i get bolder with the sizes
of the articles. But for now i have to wait until i have
a few more magazines. Some of the drivers who have only
been driving a few years, there is not enough information
on them yet, and of course i could never make a driver
i did not support!
These portraits are work in progress,
as they will be added to over time as their careers develop,
for example i am waiting for this months F1 racing magazine
that will have Jensons world championship that i can add
to his portrait.
